Frequently Asked Questions

How many students will be in each class?
There are up to 5 or less students in each class.
Who will be teaching the class?
I (Richard Zhang, M.Ed.) will be teaching the class.
How long is each class?
Each class is 70 minutes long. There is a 10-minute break at around the half-hour mark.
What will be taught in each class?
Each class will follow a theme that is the continuation from the previous class. For example, we might cover equivalent fractions in one class. In that class, we will briefly take a look at what equivalent fractions are, and do some fun exercises involving equivalent fractions. Then, in the part 2 of the class, we might go over one or two harder questions involving equivalent fractions. In the next class, we might go over another topic in fractions.
Do you give out homework? If so, what kind of homework is it?
Yes. Every week, there will be homework. The homework will be a series of review questions on the topic we covered in class. It will also have a few harder, thinking questions. One or two thinking questions might be the same question as covered in class. The students are encouraged to solve them again and review them.
How does my child do the homework? Where can he/she find it?
The homework will be given on the student dashboard. Each parent and child will receive a dashboard access. In it, there is an area to see the homework. Your child will be doing the homework with the AI Math Tutor, my proprietary AI-powered math tutoring system.
What if my child didn't understand the lesson? Can he/she ask more questions after class?
There are lots of opportunities to ask questions inside the class. Unfortunately, due to my tight schedules, I will not be able to extend the class or answer extra questions. However, your child can take advantage of the AI Math Tutor in his/her student dashboard. Ask the AI questions that your child might have. Your child can also review the class recording after the class.
What if my child doesn't understand the homework question? Who can he/she ask?
This is where AI Math Tutor comes into play. Each homework question is given by the AI Math Tutor. The AI tutor will assist, give hints, and provide explanations to guide your child toward the right answer. Of course, your child can also solve a question without the help of the AI tutor.
How many classes will there be in a week?
There will be 1 class per week. However, you are welcome to enrol your child into 2 or 3 classes in a week.
How much are the classes?
Please check the Packages page. Each package will include the teacher-led online math class, homework assignment, student & parent dashboard, AI Math Tutor homework assistance, and detailed progress report every 10 hours of instruction.
Are there free classes?
Sometimes, I hold free classes. Please contact me directly.
What are the refund policies?
Please check the Policies page.
What language will the class be conducted in?
Only English will be used.
What meeting tool will we be using?
We will use Zoom. Please download it ahead of class here. It is free to download and use.
What are the technical requirements for the class?
A computer (preferably a laptop) with a strong internet connection is required. The computer must be able to run Zoom. The computer should have webcam, microphone, and speakers enabled. Particularly, I ask that webcam is turned on and kept on throughout the class. Over the years, I've found that when everyone can see each other, students are more engaged and motivated. Also, I may ask the students to show what they wrote on their paper by holding it against the webcam.
What else should my child prepare?
Please prepare a black pen, erasers, and a stack of blank paper. Your child may need to write on the paper and show it to me. To be visible on webcam, work written with a thick black pen on white sheet of copier paper is the best.
Where should my child take the lesson?
I strongly recommend that your child takes the lesson in a quiet room at home. There shouldn't be loud noises nearby, and TV, YouTube, Netflix, radio, music, etc. should all be turned off while the lesson takes place. Your child also should not be playing with a handheld device, chatting with friends, or doing anything else that is unrelated to the lesson. During the 30-minute period before or after a break, full concentration is needed to get through the materials.
Is there a bathroom break during the lesson?
Yes, there is a 10-minute break after about 30 minutes. Your child is welcome to go to bathroom any time during the lesson as well, without the need to inform me. Just come back to the lesson afterwards.
